From the History of the Department

The Department of Foreign Languages was founded in 1991. From the moment the department was founded, it was headed by senior lecturer Tsigler М. А.  (1991-1994); senior lecturer Bevza E.P. (1995-2005). Since 2005 to the present time, the department is headed by Sulac Sofia, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor.

Throughout the history of the department, teachers from Greece, the USA, Great Britain and Poland have worked at the department. In addition, professors and university lecturers from other regions of Moldova teach at the department. The teachers of the department had training in the USA – they participated in "Fulbright" and "IREX" programs, and in Germany in "DAAD" and "PAD" programs. They also collaborate with colleagues from other universities from Moldova, that allows them to exchange experience and modernize the educational process. Teachers publish their research works in national and international scientific journals and collections of scientific papers.

From 1999 to the present, the youth from our region, as well as students of Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Turkey have been studying in academic groups. During the period of its activity, the department has educated specialists in the following specialties "English Language and Literature. German Language”, “German Language and Literature. English Language”, “English Language and Literature. Romanian Language", "English Language and Literature. Russian Language”, “Romanian Language and Literature. Greek Language”, “Computer Science and German Language/English Language”, “ German Language and Literature. Greek Language”, “ English Language and Literature. Spanish".

 

Mission of the Department of Foreign Languages:

- implementation of educational, international, scientific and social and cultural activities;

- training philologists of a new generation: the one who knows  two or three foreign languages ​​and the principles of their functioning in relation to various spheres of speech communication; the one who has a high level of general humanitarian education; the one who efficiently uses information technology; the one who has specialized skills and abilities in the field of  business foreign language; the one who possesses interactive methods of improving language competence and possessing critical thinking; who is able to quickly navigate in the rapidly growing flow of information; who is capable for further education and self-education and easily adapts to the conditions of the modern labor market.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Foreign Languages ​​of Comrat State University offers innovative and modern programs in the field of teaching English and German languages ​​and culture of Germanic-speaking peoples, which will provide you with the necessary critical skills that are in demand in the labor market in the 21st century. Within the framework of the specialty program French and Latin are also taught. In addition, courses of teaching Chinese, Greek, Hungarian and Turkish languages ​​are organized by the department. Various international programs of studying and exchanging experience abroad give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language environment and culture of native speakers of the languages ​​they study.

The Department of Foreign Languages is one of the leading departments at the Faculty of National Culture of Comrat State University. The teaching staff includes full-time employees and part-time specialists, including 1 Professor, 6 Associate Professors, 5 PhD students, University Lecturers, graduates of the department. The Department provides training at different levels of language proficiency and offers combined programs in the field of teaching English, German and Russian.

Today the Department trains specialists in the following specialties of the first cycle of study: 0114.10 “Foreign Languages (English and German; English and Russian)”, and their combinations with the following specialties - 0114.8 “Romanian Language and Literature”, 0114.9 “Languages and Literature (Russian, Bulgarian, Gagauzian)”. After completing their studies in the first cycle (Bachelor), students have the opportunity to continue their studies at the second cycle (Master's) in the direction 011 “Teaching Germanic Languages at Pre-university Educational Institutions in a Multiethnic Environment”.

Currently, the youth of our region, as well as citizens from Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and the Republic of Turkey study in academic groups.

All our students can get semester academic and social scholarships, as well as annual republican, parliamentary, presidential and other additional scholarships.

 

The Department offers English teachers from gymnasiums, lyceums and colleges to take advanced training courses, to improve their teaching methods and learn about modern approaches.

 At the Department of Foreign Languages, there function American, British, German, Greek and Hungarian resource and cultural centers, which are equipped with modern equipment and technology; this makes it possible to use multimedia tools in teaching foreign languages. In addition, there is a variety of fiction and specialized literature: textbooks, dictionaries, reference books and periodicals. Students and pupils of schools and lyceums of the region have the opportunity to use literature for the purpose of writing essays, term papers, as well as Diploma Papers and Master Theses.

As part of the FULBRIGHT program, the Department is visited annually by teachers and Associate Professors from the United States. They organize discussion clubs in English, where participants practice conversational English with native speakers and participate in various cultural events.

Collaboration with international programs on academic mobility "DAAD" and "FULBRIGHT" is fruitful, within which students and teachers have the opportunity to travel to Germany and the United States, respectively, to take international summer courses in in-depth study of the German language, write a thesis, study at master’s and / or doctoral cycle, as well as for advanced training and research. Recently, students have shown great interest in the GLOBAL UGRAD and ERASMUS + programs, which allow them to study at universities in the United States of America and Europe for one semester or academic year.

The unique history and special palette of culture of our region create a favorable environment for the students of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​to better understand different cultures and study languages. Modern, technically equipped classrooms allow our students to immerse themselves most effectively in the language environment at the lectures, and the use of such Internet technologies and platforms as MOODLE, BigBlueButton, Padlet.com, quizzizz.com, Google Presentation, EdPuzzle.com, ZOOM allows students to consolidate the material they have studied at the lecture and learn something additional by individual work with the language they are interested in.

The teaching staff of the Department is actively working on the development and participation in various projects with the aim of further development and competitiveness of the department, as well as to improve the quality of teaching. The teaching staff of the department initiates and cooperates with the universities from Turkey (within the program: Mevlana) and Poland (Erasmus +).

Upon graduation, the graduates of the Department have the opportunity to work as teachers in secondary schools and lyceums, colleges and universities, as translators of national and international projects, in organizations and institutions, as well as in non-governmental organizations, local and regional authorities and in the field of tourism. 

MAIN AREAS OF ACTIVITY OF THE DEPARTMENT

 

1) The Department of Foreign Languages provides four years’ study in teaching language, literature and culture of the Germanic peoples as the basis for our language specialties for bachelor's degree, followed by the opportunity to continue studying for  master's degree.

2) The Department graduates specialists with Master's Degree in specialty 011 “Teaching Germanic Languages at Pre-university Educational Institutions in a Multiethnic Environment” who are able to: a) make right decisions in the field of teaching English or German languages, literature and culture; b) initiate and carry out research projects on relevant topics in English, German or Russian in the comparative fields of Germanic Philology and Didactics.

3) The Department prepares graduate students to study in Doctoral Schools.

4) The Department graduates specialists who possess: a) a fluent knowledge of English, German and Russian vocabulary, grammar, theoretical linguistics and the skills to use them; b) the ability to understand and analyze English, German and Russian literature; c) knowledge about the history and culture of the English and German-speaking peoples.

5) Thanks to close and fruitful cooperation with foreign embassies, experience exchange programs and research programs, teachers from all over the world come to the Department and it  becomes a platform for free learning of English, Chinese and Greek languages ​​not only for the students and university staff, but also for all residents of the region. Teaching is conducted by native speakers of the respective language.

6) The Department of Foreign Languages prepares specialists for local employment that meet the needs of our multicultural community, not only in the area of education and language, but also for other positions that require knowledge of foreign languages ​​and culture, for example, in the field of translation, social sphere, tourism, public relations, international business, migration, foreign trade, diplomacy, as well as for solving problems in the new global economy.

7) Specialists of the department are also engaged in research activities in the field of language and intercultural communication in order to further develop and diversify the main activities of the department.

The graduates of the department work in the following institutions: Comrat State University, Comrat Pedagogical College, Svetly Agricultural and Technological College, lyceums and gymnasiums of the region of the Republic of Moldova, non-governmental organizations, etc .; and are also counselors and employees of municipal government and regional executive authorities.
