International Mother Language Day is celebrated worldwide on February 21 every year. The International Mother Language Day was established at the 30th General Conference of UNESCO in 1999 and has been observed globally since 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The United Nations General Assembly welcomed the proclamation of this day in its 2002 resolution. On December 18, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 2022-2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to draw global attention to the catastrophic loss of many indigenous languages and to mobilize stakeholders and resources for their preservation, revitalization, and promotion. On February 28, 2020, in Mexico City (Mexico), participants of the high-level event "Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages" published a strategic roadmap for the Decade, focusing on empowering indigenous language speakers. More than 500 participants from 50 countries, including ministers, indigenous leaders, researchers, public and private partners, as well as other stakeholders and experts, adopted the Los Pinos Declaration under the slogan "Nothing for us without us."
