Festive event for March 8 Day at the Department of Foreign Languages of Comrat State University

There is an Unusual Day in March: a special event dedicated to the 8th of March

at the Department of Foreign Languages of Comrat State University

On March 7, 2024, as a part of Practical English Course, there was held a special event dedicated to International Women’s Day for first-year students at the Department of Foreign Languages, group AN-23. The guests of this event were second-year students of group RE-22. Students learned about the history of the holiday, traditions of its celebration, and read poems dedicated to the mother.

The special event in English began with an introductory word of the lecturer: “Good afternoon, dear students!” I am glad to see you! Today we shall have an unusual lesson. It’s devoted to one of the most beautiful holidays of the year. Beauty, woman, flowers, Mother! There are not so many days in the year when we pronounce these pleasant words! Today, you have an excellent chance to plunge into the atmosphere of joy, happiness and love. I hope you will enjoy our lesson!” After this introductory word, students were invited to comment on the lesson motto. This motto commentary activity allowed students to practice their speaking skills and get prepared for the lesson. This was followed by the “Before we start” rubric, where students had to name the main holidays of the year and then match them with dates by completing the “Match the parts of the sentences” exercise. Thanks to this moment of the lesson, the participants named the holiday they were going to discuss in English.

After a presentation about the history of the holiday, the main part of the event began, which consisted of a variety of activities prepared by students to perform at the event. Diana Tabunshchik together with Anna Nedioglo prepared an interesting rubric “Brainstorming”. The task was that the participants of the event had to write the word they associate with March 8 and write it on the flower petals prepared by the students. Everyone came out and stuck their petals on the board, commenting on their word. The result was a flower with the inscription March 8th in the middle and words-petals around it.

This was followed by lines from poems dedicated to March 8, “The 8th of March is Women’s Day” and “There is the flowers’ smell, you see.” Students Semyon Marangoz and Olesya Rusnak enthusiastically read these poems in English. After reading, students had to find all the nouns and adjectives in the poems and analyze them. All students did an excellent job with this task.

Olga Lopushnyan presented a thematic crossword puzzle, which greatly interested the participants of the event. They, in turn, worked in groups, solving the answers with interest and filling out the crossword puzzle vertically and horizontally. And Ksenia Komur proposed a thematic puzzle “Mother’s Day Word Search” for solution. The presentation by Elena Kiulafly, who presented information about how this holiday is celebrated in other countries of the world, was interesting and informative for everyone. Margarita Tukan and Karina Demyan provided the event participants with the opportunity to watch a thematic video and then answer questions about the video they watched. Alena Kirchioglo prepared riddles on the topic, and by guessing each participant who answered correctly received a sweet gift.

The special event “There is a special Day in March” was not complete without a competition. Marina Malenkova organized a competition called “Women’s names in songs.” Participants had to name songs with female names; Whoever calls the most wins. After this competition, a quiz was organized, in which “MISS ARTISTRY”, “MISS FASHION”, “MISS TENDERNESS”, “MISS POWER”, and “MISS INTELLIGENCE” were selected. Thanks to this quiz, the participants had to show their talents in artistry, fashion, mental abilities, the art of being gentle, and also the ability to lead. Quiz had a good influence on everyone.

The event dedicated to Women’s Day ended with a wonderful performance of a song about mother, sung by Alla Songrova. The last minutes of the lesson were filled with words of congratulations and gratitude. As a sign of this, students of the AN-23 group prepared a video where they congratulated their dearest women: grandmothers, mothers, sisters, as well as their teachers.

To summarize, it should be pointed out that all prepared activities for this lesson gave all participants and guests a lot of pleasant and positive emotions. The event filled the atmosphere with spring mood. Everyone was happy.
