The Librarian's Day in the Republic of Moldova has been celebrated since 2000, when a presidential decree was signed establishing this celebration on October 5th. In 2010, at the request of the Association of Librarians from the Republic of Moldova, an amendment was made to Presidential Decree No. 189 of February 8, 2010, establishing the date of the celebration. This amendment was justified by the fact that in many countries around the world, including the USA, Great Britain, Romania, etc., the profession of librarian is celebrated on April 23rd, on World Book and Copyright Day, instituted by UNESCO in 1995 at the General Conference in Paris, or on dates close to this day. The purpose of this day is to promote the right and freedom to read, encourage and stimulate reading, attract young people to cultural institutions, to the library, to books and reading. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to appreciate the importance of librarians as mediators between the world of books, information, and readers.
