Memorial Evening Dedicated to Literary Critic and Publicist Ivan V. Topal

On March 25, 2026, a memorial evening dedicated to Ivan V. Topal (1948–2014) was held in the reading hall of the Scientific Library of Comrat State University, along with the presentation of his book “The Temptation of Freedom.”

The event was opened with welcoming remarks by Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, Doctor, Associate Professor Liudmila Fedotova.

A presentation titled “Dedicated to I. Topal…” (prepared by Head of the Scientific Library Janna Garceva) highlighted the life and work of Ivan Topal — a literary critic, poet, publicist, and editor of the newspaper “Açık Göz.”

Chief Librarian of the P. Draganov Central Library, E.G. Lyulenova, emphasized Ivan Topal’s significant contribution to Gagauz culture through his publicistic essays, literary and analytical articles, and journalistic work.

Ivan Topal published in district, republican, and all-Union press. He was the editor of his own newspaper “Açık Göz,” where he wrote on topical issues, poetry, epigrams, and fables. He described himself as a “lover of fine literature.”

His wife, Evdokia Dmitrievna, shared personal memories, speaking about his love for literature and poetry, as well as his strong stance against bureaucracy, injustice, and corruption. Ivan Topal was an active participant in the struggle for the self-determination of the Gagauz people and was repeatedly elected as a deputy to local authorities. His public speeches contributed to the establishment of Gagauz autonomy.

His close friend, philologist, Gagauz studies scholar, writer, publicist, and translator Pyotr Chebotar presented the book “The Temptation of Freedom.” The materials were collected by Topal himself and include articles, speeches, poems, epigrams, and the satirical work “Knight’s Move.” The book was published by family and friends with a limited print run of 100 copies.

Poet Ivan Dudoglo (Samson) recited several poems, including those dedicated to Ivan Topal. Gagauz poetess Ekaterina Ganeva shared her memories of friendship with him.

Friends and colleagues shared memories, read poems, and watched video excerpts and photo presentations. The event was attended by librarians, museum staff, teachers, and students.

A personal exhibition dedicated to Ivan Topal was also organized by the CSU library staff.

Ivan V. Topal passed away on March 26, 2014, but his legacy — literary and journalistic works, investigations, reflections, and essays — remains relevant and continues to inspire readers.
