In accordance with the Cooperation Agreement between Comrat State University (CSU) and the Center for Legal Assistance for Refugees (CDA), implemented within the Sergio Vieira de Mello Academic Chair (SVMAC) initiative with the support of UNHCR Moldova, CSU continues to advance research dedicated to the integration of refugees and persons in need of international protection.
The first successfully completed research project, DiVersiUni (Diversity + University + Dialogue), focused on strengthening intercultural dialogue and fostering inclusion within higher education institutions. Completed in 2025, the project included sociological research, thematic events, policy recommendations to support refugee students, and the development of institutional guidelines for universities.
Currently, the CSU project team, led by Prof. Dr. Habil. Alla Levitskaia, has launched its second research initiative focusing on the socioeconomic integration of displaced Ukrainian women in the Republic of Moldova. The project, "WINGS-MD: Gendered Pathways of Socioeconomic Integration of Displaced Ukrainian Women in Moldova: Language, Care Responsibilities and Ageing," was selected for funding under the Academic Research (Objective 1) grant competition, alongside three other winning projects from ASEM, Moldova State University (USM), and "Ion Creangă" State Pedagogical University (UPSC).
The project examines gender-specific dimensions of socioeconomic integration, with particular attention to language barriers, caregiving responsibilities, and ageing. The research includes a survey of at least 150 displaced Ukrainians and refugees, 20 in-depth interviews, and four focus groups conducted in Chișinău, Bălți, Tiraspol, and Comrat.
Field activities have already begun with focus groups held in Bălți, Tiraspol, and Comrat. The findings will form the basis of an analytical report and evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at improving refugee integration policies and support programmes in the Republic of Moldova.
