CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: EU4Dialogue Summer School

EU4Dialogue Summer School

“History vs. Histories: The Interactive Approach to Understanding a Shared Past”

12 – 18 August 2023

(Tampere, Finland)

In the framework of the EU-funded project “EU4Dialogue: Improving exchanges across the divide through education and culture” (Component 3), Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI), a research unit within the Faculty of Social Sciences at Tampere University, invites applications to the summer school “History vs. Histories: The Interactive Approach to Understanding a Shared Past.” This educational initiative aims to foster exchange, joint learning, and networking among future and early career historians from South Caucasus and Moldova including the conflict affected regions. The summer school will provide an opportunity to increase their professional expertise and knowledge about alternative ways of studying, teaching, and representing history. The one-week summer school will be organized on 12–18 August 2023 in picturesque natural surroundings by the Pyhäjärvi lake within a walking distance from the center of Tampere, the third largest city in Finland, known for its diverse historical experiences.

Content

The summer school provides training in alternative approaches and methods of history research for future and early career scholars who are about to create historical narratives. The learning openings offered by the summer school will help them overcome the conflict-inducing narratives and look at history from non-conflictual angles. Moreover, this is a unique opportunity for the participants to familiarize themselves with the ways Finland has dealt with its conflict-affected past. Such training will open prospects for a new generation of scholars to approach the shared past with mutual respect.

The summer school agenda is drafted in cooperation with the historians from the South Caucasus and Moldova brought together by the EU4Dialogue Component 1 that aims to establish an environment conducive to defusing tension, encouraging dialogue, and fostering better understanding across the divides in the region. The summer school includes lectures, seminars, collaborative learning assignments, methodological training, and teambuilding activities. The school also ensures the opportunity to gain cultural experience through museum visits and excursions to historical sites, and of course, to enjoy the nature of Finland. The language of instruction is English.

Upon completion of the summer school, participants:

  • will know new theories and concepts in history research,
  • will be able to apply advanced methods of non-conflictual representation of shared history,
  • will be ready to engage in dialogue and cooperate with colleagues across divides,
  • will be familiarized with historical experiences of populations in Finland and wider region, and the ways local historians have studied and represented them.

Tampere Peace Research Institute will organize teaching implementation. TAPRI is one of the leading peace research centres in Europe. It was founded in Tampere in 1969. Currently, TAPRI is a multidisciplinary research centre within the Faculty of Social Sciences at Tampere University that hosts an international master’s degree programme in Peace, Mediation, and Conflict Research, as well as a doctorate programme in Peace and Conflict Studies.

All costs for participants, including travel-related costs, accommodation, meals, and excursions are fully covered by the EU-funded project.

Acceptance requirements

  • be an advanced master’s degree student or PhD student (1st or 2nd year) in history-related disciplines from South Caucasus and Moldova including the conflict affected regions,
  • be able to study and communicate in English,
  • show willingness for open dialogue and cooperation with colleagues across the divides,
