Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS)

The Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS) is a language proficiency test developed by the Yunus Emre Institute to assess the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills of individuals learning Turkish as a foreign or second language. It is designed in accordance with the proficiency descriptors defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and has been administered internationally three times a year since 2013, both in Turkey and simultaneously in all countries where Yunus Emre Institutes are located.

The TYS, developed by the Yunus Emre Institute, received the Q-mark quality certification from ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe), becoming the first internationally recognized Turkish language proficiency exam. Measuring and evaluating individuals' competencies in reading, listening, writing, and speaking with valid and reliable tools is of great importance. The TYS, as a standardized exam with international validity, also aims to standardize Turkish language instruction across various institutions abroad.

The TYS not only increases the interest of international students in Turkey but also plays a significant role in facilitating the acceptance and evaluation of their applications for education or employment on a more solid basis.

The TYS consists of three sessions. The first two sessions (Reading, Listening, and Writing) are conducted as group exams, while the third session (Speaking) is conducted individually for each candidate. The first session lasts 105 minutes, the second session 60 minutes, and the third session 15 minutes—making the total exam duration 180 minutes.

Candidates who pass the exam receive a Turkish Proficiency Certificate at either the B2 or C1 level based on their scores. The Turkish Proficiency Certificate, certified with ALTE’s Q-mark, is the first internationally valid Turkish language proficiency certificate.

Candidates holding a Turkish Proficiency Certificate are exempt from attending the Turkish preparatory class if they are admitted to study at any institution in Turkey. Additionally, foreigners who wish to work as Turkish teachers, guides, or interpreters are also required to have this certificate. The Turkish Proficiency Certificate provides a significant advantage in job applications.
