“The Famine of 1946-1947: History and Memory in Gagauzia”

(December 8-10, 2025)

The Comrat State University organizes on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 12:30, the opening of the exhibition “The Famine of 1946-1947: History and Memory in Gagauzia”, dedicated to one of the most tragic pages in the history of the totalitarian-communist regime. The exhibition reveals the premises, causes and dramatic consequences of the famine of 1946–1947 in the south of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, thus contributing to the elucidation of the menace of famine in Gagauz communities. The exhibition material brings to the attention of the academic environment and the larger public testimonies, photographs and archival documents, previously inaccessible, and exhibited to the public for the first time. The exhibition presents the appeal to history and memory as an act of symbolic justice for all victims of the famine in the Moldavian SSR in the period of 1946-1947, thus contributing to the building of a European culture of memory in the society of the Republic of Moldova. The exhibition is organized within the project “The Famine of 1946-1947: History and Memory in Gagauzia”, elaborated by the History Museum of the Avdarma Village in cooperation with the National Museum of History of Moldova, within the National Program “Access to Culture 2025” of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova.
