Announcement! Students and master’s students of the Faculty of Law are invited to participate in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition

 

The Jessup Competition is one of the most prestigious international moot court competitions, and the largest in the world, with participants from around 700 law schools in 100 countries and jurisdictions. Its goal is to deepen knowledge in the field of public international law and strengthen research, writing, legal argumentation, and teamwork skills.

  • Participation in this event gives students the opportunity to improve their knowledge of international law, interact with peers from around the world, and hone their research and presentation skills.

  • Explore issues related to public international law and UN acts.
  • Represent the university and the Republic of Moldova in a prestigious competition.

Details of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition: 

The competition simulates a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the judicial organ of the United Nations. The Jessup 2025 problem includes the following issues:

  1. The rights and obligations of other members of the international community when two persons claim to be the legitimate president of a state.
  2. Invocation of immunity for government officials accused of grave violations of human rights.
  3. Legal consequences of receding coastlines for the maritime zones of coastal states.
  4. Interpretation of the compromissory clause in a treaty creating a regional organization.

How to apply? 

Each educational institution can submit one team consisting of 2-5 students and up to 5 coaches. If there are multiple teams, a national competition is held, and the winning team goes to Washington to represent the Republic of Moldova.

To register for the Jessup competition:

  1. The team representative must complete the Jessup registration form available here: https://jessup.ilsa.org/jessup-team-registration/ by the deadline specified in the official schedule, November 22, 2024.
  2. Pay the registration fee by November 21. The registration fee is paid on the team page (access provided upon registration): https://jessup.ilsa.org/wp-login.php. For students from the Republic of Moldova, the registration fee for the 2025 team is 125 USD. Each team is responsible for paying the registration fee. Teams with limited financial resources can apply for a fee waiver or reduction by filling out the fee waiver application form located at the bottom of the team’s main page - https://jessup.ilsa.org/wp-login.php.
  3. Register all individual team members.

Travel and accommodation expenses are self-funded. The NCSC team is ready to provide any possible support in finding sponsors for interested teams.
