On 20 November 2025, Comrat State University hosted the final meeting of the project “Strengthening Intercultural Dialogue and Inclusion in the University Environment of the Republic of Moldova” – DiVersiUni (Diversity • University • Dialogue). The event focused on presenting and discussing the results of the study on the integration of refugee students into the academic environment. The meeting was held in a hybrid format: 36 students and lecturers from CSU participated offline, while 16 participants from Cahul State University joined online.
The project aimed to:
- Identify the factors hindering academic, social, and cultural integration of refugee students;
- Analyse the awareness and attitudes of local students toward refugees and stateless persons;
- Assess the institutional readiness of universities to work with vulnerable groups;
- Develop practical tools to enhance inclusiveness within the university environment.
The collected data served as the basis for two key documents:
• Regulation on Supporting and Integrating Refugee Students;
• Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism on the Status of Refugee Students.
Based on the research, recommendations were developed on three levels:
National Level
• Improve temporary protection regulations and diploma recognition procedures;
• Provide tax incentives for companies hiring refugees;
• Launch social housing programmes;
• Ensure free psychosocial support.
University Level
• Establish language centres;
• Create multilingual information centres;
• Expand peer-mentoring programmes;
• Open psychological counselling units;
• Offer micro-grants and support for refugee student initiatives.
Cross-Sector Recommendations
• Strengthen cooperation between government, universities, and NGOs;
• Appoint refugee integration coordinators in each university;
• Create a unified RU/UA/EN digital platform;
• Organise intercultural and community-based projects.
The discussion confirmed the importance of continuing efforts to enhance inclusiveness in universities in southern Moldova. The DiVersiUni project represents a significant step toward strengthening intercultural dialogue, increasing social cohesion, and improving support for refugee students.
The project is implemented jointly by Comrat State University and “B.P. Hasdeu” State University of Cahul, with the support of the SVMAC Grant Program and the Lawyers’ Center.
